Govt slashes import obligation on cellphones, chargers, some elements

The federal government on Tuesday proposed slashing import obligation on cellphones, chargers and a few elements which might be used for manufacturing of handsets within the Union Funds for fiscal 12 months 2024-25.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated with a three-fold improve in home manufacturing and virtually 100-fold bounce in exports of cellphones during the last six years, the Indian cell phone business has matured.

“Within the curiosity of customers, I now suggest to cut back the BCD (primary customs obligation) on cell phone, cell PCBA and cell charger to fifteen per cent,” Sitharaman stated.

Earlier BCD on cellphones, chargers and motherboard was 20 per cent.

The federal government has proposed to exempt specified items to be used in manufacturing of connectors in cellphones and oxygen-free copper to be used in manufacturing of resistors (an digital element) from BCD levy.

The BCD on specified items to be used in manufacturing of connectors was within the vary of 5 to 7.5 per cent and oxygen-free copper to be used in manufacturing of resistors attracted 5 per cent BCD.

Cell phone business physique ICEA stated that the transfer will improve export competitiveness of India within the section.

“We had advisable to cut back BCD on cellphones, its PCBA and charger/adapter to fifteen per cent, which has been accepted. The cell and electronics business is elated with the bulletins and can go an extended approach to improve manufacturing, exports and our competitiveness,” ICEA chairman Pankaj Mohindroo stated.
