JNPA to pump in ₹100 crore to arrange shore-power for ships; India’s first, says chairman

To eradicate using diesel for powering ships that berth at its port, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) will likely be investing near ₹100 crore for establishing India’s first pilot mission for shore-electric-power-supply.

“On a pilot foundation, we plan to supply shore electrical energy provide to ships that berth at considered one of our terminals at Jawaharlal Nehru Port. This would be the first such mission in India,” Unmesh Wagh, chairperson, JNPA advised enterprise line in Mumbai.

This pilot mission is scheduled to be executed on the third container terminal of Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Maharashtra. This terminal belongs to Gateway Terminals India which is a three way partnership between APM Terminals and the Container Company of India Ltd (CONCOR).

On this regard, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will likely be signed with all stakeholders on July 11. Whereas at berth, ships often use some base load electrical energy for working important providers like hoteling, unloading and loading actions.

Whereas at port, the ships use their very own diesel engines to supply electrical energy. For example a mid-sized tanker wants 400 Kw (excluding energy wanted for cargo operations and ballast operations). Such a tanker would want 12 MwH of electrical energy all of which is being generated by the diesel engines of the ship at berth.

“This facility will assist energy two ships concurrently. It’ll assist us eradicate using diesel at our ports” he stated, including that the JNPA already makes use of shore electrical energy for its tugs once they stay berthed.

‘We’ll award the tenders for this pilot mission within the subsequent three months,” Wagh stated. JNPA plans to increase this facility to all of the terminals if the pilot mission is profitable. “If we prolong this facility throughout all our terminals then we are going to want a complete of 74 MW (Megawatt). We’ll want roughly ₹600 crore to cowl your entire port,” he added. The shore energy will likely be offered from the nationwide grid to visiting ships on the port.

Between April-November 2023, over 15200 ships visited the 12 main ports in India together with Jawaharlal Nehru Port. These ships had a median flip round time of 48.46 hours or little over 2 days and a shift to shore energy is predicted to assist lower down on utilization of diesel and the air pollution attributable to it.

JNPA is already working in the direction of eliminating diesel autos from plying contained in the port premises. “By August 15, we could have two battery operated vehicles in operation. Throughout the subsequent one yr, all 400 diesel vehicles working between the shore and the yard will likely be transformed to electrical. This may be sure that all autos working contained in the port are electrical,” the JNPA chairman added.
