NEC completes submarine cable system for BSNL connecting Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands

NEC Company India (NEC India) together with NEC Company has efficiently accomplished the optical submarine cable system in southern India connecting Kochi and Lakshadweep Islands.

The Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Cable (KLI), developed below the Authorities of India’s ‘Digital India’ mission, was inaugurated not too long ago by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He unveiled the initiative to hyperlink the Lakshadweep Islands with a submarine optical fiber cable inside 1,000 days. Funded by the Common Providers Obligation Fund (USOF), the venture was executed by BSNL.

NEC India was awarded with this venture by BSNL in September 2021, finishing it forward of schedule in June 2023. Spanning roughly 1,870 km, the system provides an preliminary capability of 2×100 Gbps, expandable as much as 1,600 gbps per fibre pair.

The system connects Kochi with 11 Lakshadweep islands: Agatti, Androth, Amini, Bangaram, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kavaratti, Kiltan, Kalpeni, and Minicoy. Offering ample bandwidth for voice and knowledge connectivity, the cable helps e-governance initiatives, facilitates new enterprises, and allows e-commerce amenities.
