Operations at container freight stations (CFS) in Chennai and Thoothukudi stay disrupted as they proceed to take care of the aftermath of the latest heavy rains. The deluge dumped by Cyclone Michaung in Chennai and the North-East monsoon in Thoothukudi led to in depth waterlogging and injury to cargo on the CFSs.
There are round 30 CFSs in North Chennai and 16 in Thoothukudi, which function a warehouse for items awaiting delivery by way of containers. They play a significant position in consolidating cargo that isn’t giant sufficient to fill a complete container by itself (less-than-container load cargo) and function momentary storage for import and export items.
The operational challenges on the CFSs spilled over to the ports, impeding the movement of containers.
The Chennai chapter of the Nationwide Affiliation of Container Freight Stations reported difficulties at Chennai port brought on by the cyclonic after-effects, resulting in congestion and delays in container evacuation. Flooding in North Chennai left a number of CFSs inoperable for 4 to 5 days, impacting container motion.
Terminals, making an attempt to accommodate vessels on the outer anchorage, grew to become overcrowded. They imposed restrictions on the inward motion of autos carrying containers for export and the motion of import-laden autos to CFSs. This worsened the delay in container supply and congestion on the terminals, in accordance with the affiliation.
In Thoothukudi, operations have been halted resulting from energy outages brought on by waterlogging. Efforts are underway to revive normalcy, with mills used to pump out water from the services. Operations are anticipated to renew in a day or two.
As soon as circumstances stabilise, a complete survey will likely be undertaken to evaluate the fallout of the rains on the area’s cargo sector. Preliminary estimates recommend potential losses exceeding ₹1,000 crore in each Chennai and Thoothukudi. The lingering results of the disruptions are inflicting delays in truck actions from terminals to CFSs, exacerbating the challenges confronted by the container commerce.
