Thoothukudi flower farmers face drastic worth drop amid peak wedding ceremony and competition season

Jasmine and chrysanthemum farmers in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu are contending with a pointy fall in flower costs this season.

Farmers say that costs have dropped regardless of it being the marriage and competition season, when demand for flowers is usually at its peak.

ARUMUGATHAAI, Farmer: “We’re promoting the flowers at Rs 200-300 per kg now. There are lot of marriage capabilities scheduled to occur on this month, throughout this season we use to promote flowers at Rs 600-700 per kg.”

ESWARI, Farmer: “We’re planting lot of types however there may be much less worth for flowers we’re receiving solely 200-250 Rs per kg, we want at the very least Rs 600 per kg, we’re completely depending on this for our livelihood.”

Floriculture is broadly practised in villages reminiscent of Osanoothu, Mangalam, and Ottapidaram, which function main sources of revenue for farmers within the area.
